EXAMPLE OF A SOCIAL STORY

An OASIS member has kindly agreed to allow their social story, written to help a teenager cope at secondary school, to be shared with other members.  Names have been changed to Disney characters for the purpose of anonymity.  If you have access to a digital camera you could expand this story to help at home too - by adding photographs of people your child works with at school, and photos of family and friends who will be happy with the child’s good behaviour and success at staying calm.  A copy could also be given to the school.

Do you have a social story you would like to share with other members – please send it in for publication.

Sometimes in school I get very angry.

This happens when people call me names like Simmy or Samba, which I hate.

I also get annoyed when members of staff call me Sind or Sinbad but I kept reminding them to say Simba properly.

I get upset also if I get stuck in my work.

When I get angry I feel like I’m boiling!  Like magma inside a volcano.  My heart-rate increases and my breathing gets faster.

I can try some techniques to help me calm down when I get angry.

These are: -

·         I can count to 10 slowly in my head.  This slows down my heart-rate and makes me feel calm.

·         I can have a drink of water from my bottle.

·         I can breathe in deeply through my nose – five deep breaths is enough.  This slows my heart-rate down and gets oxygen to my brain.

I will try these techniques and I will test them out scientifically.

If I do this the teachers and TAs will feel happy for me, and I will feel happy too because I am taking control.
